Site redirects

Postby LPhillips » Tue Jul 24, 2012 2:51 am

Hi there.

Has anyone else experienced a problem with redirects? First, let me say that the virus being discussed is attached to a popular website by a hacker, and that is completely out of the control of the moderators of the site. So, if it is indeed related to Warbarons, they are victims as well.

I've acquired a TDSS virus. It takes advantage of Microsoft's bull**** security and installs itself like a remora to root processes. This attack began by redirecting me to something through facebook any time I used Warbarons on Firefox. I was considering bringing this up to the mods, when it began to hijack my google searches, now in all browsers. Obviously this is not a run-of-the-mill advertising scheme. It continues to hijack me more and more frequently even as I write. I'm familiar with these little pieces of crappy programming, and I'm about to remove it. However, it's important to ask if anyone else has had this problem.

If it is related to this wonderful site, the only reasonable way to find out is through a poll. By the way, if you do get this little viral infection, standard virus removal is completely helpless against it. It's actually one hell of a thing to get rid of, so shoot me a message before doing anything.

Thanks all, and don't be alarmed! There is no concern for permanent damage to your computer in relation to this site or the virus discussed.

Umm... Apparently, these viruses are actually quite diverse and unpredictable. This rootkit is not as simple as thr ones removed before. It is likely that the virus picked my my most loaded page as a launching point for attack, so no worries for the site. However, I will be setting some sitters and unable to participate for an indefinite time, as Windows is built like someone gave 30 people blowtorches and scrap iron and told them to build a sky scraper with no blueprints. Best wished all, later.

Thanks for the consideration. I had my teammates to help sit!

The malware is gone. It just about ate my computer, because Windows is pretty easy for something to hijack. This sort of malware starts letting in other things and then after a while you've just got layers of self-preserving rootkits that each prevent the others from being tampered with. Rootkits run below the operating system, and can hide from any anti-virus system.

In summary: I beat the heck out of some of them, fighting the symptoms to keep my accounts/info secure, which then made them harder to trace for the computer guy (even after deletion, they leave all kinds of crap and altered code on your computer). It was so bad he couldn't even run his software and had to isolate and remove code piece by piece until his cleanup software could run. After a couple of days, I got a squeeky-clean PC.

Back in action, though several games down of course :-P
